The unfortunate scene unfolded before helpless Race Track staff and patrons, and as of yet officials are at a loss to explain the deaths of two of the tracks rising stars. The Newbury Horse Racing Venue had never experienced a tragedy such as this, and at the time of this writing, electrocution was the unofficial cause of the deaths of two mounts during the early afternoon race.
Officials offered up a possible cause when pressed by local media. The track had recently undergone extensive renovations including the laying of new electrical line under the entire complex, and while they were quick to add that electrocution was merely a preliminary conclusion at that point, they admitted that initial eyewitness reports pointed to shock as the cause of death of their horses.
The track was moist that evening and horses are far more sensitive to electricity than humans. Additionally two riders claimed that they had evidence to support their claims in the form of burned bridles. The evidence was handed over to local authorities that were investigating the incident. One rider pulled his mount from the race after the horse fell unexpectedly to it knees. Another was walking when, from behind, he felt his horse go to the ground. That horse never recovered.
Despite the tragic accident, officials were quick to point out that they were taking all necessary steps to remedy the rare situation and that the track would soon be declared safe for continuing races scheduled later in the week.
